Why is Cellular Connection Not Working on iPhone after Reset?

By FonePaw | Nov 02 , 2021

Some people face problems with their cellular connection and are not sure why it transpired in the first place.

For a brief refresher, cellular connections allow us to surf online and do many other things – in short, it gives us access to the internet even when we’re not connected to Wi-Fi. If it happens that your iPhone’s cellular connection does not work after the reset, there are a few things you can do to fix this problem.

To allow your iPhone to connect to the cellular network, try toggling airplane mode. Then, remove the SIM card and check if it’s inserted properly. If there’s an iOS update, update it to the latest version. Proceed to reset its network settings if the issue persists.

In understanding the fix process further, it’s imperative to learn what really happens with our device after it’s been reset.

What Happens to an iPhone After a Reset?

Smartphones have two (2) types of resets: network settings reset and factory reset.

Reset Network Settings

Resetting the network settings is just like refreshing or clearing the network capability of the iPhone. Part of the things that are reset include saved Wi-Fi connections, cellular data options, and other things if the like.

Factory Data Reset

Factory resetting, on the other hand, depletes and removes everything on the device. From the term alone, it reverts your iPhone back to its factory default settings or the state when you got it from the manufacturer.

So, if in case your cellular data started to act up after doing a factory reset, what should you do?

Things To Do To Fix The iPhone’s Cellular Connection

Don’t be lost in finding what you can do to fix this problem! Note that there’s no chronological order on what you have to do; simply following these steps will help you get the answer to your problem!

Toggle Airplane Mode

This process is actually known to be the soft reset network settings. Soft because it doesn’t reset network and connection data that’s been set on your device. You can toggle this by going into Settings > Airplane Mode. Turn it on and leave it for about 30 seconds and turn it back off.

Take Off the SIM Card and Insert it Back Again

The iPhone’s SIM card is where your phone number is, and that piece of technology connects you to your carrier’s network. If your cellular connection is not working after Reset, remove and reinsert your iPhone’s SIM card. That will give your iPhone a new start, and you can connect to your carrier’s network properly. Keep in mind that removing a SIM card may sometimes be difficult, so check the proper instructions to do it correctly to avoid any significant problems.

Turn Your iPhone’s Cellular Data On

Once again, you might just have it turned off. Visit the Settings section of your iPhone, where you can turn on the switch located at the top of the screen. You will know that the data is on when the button becomes green. If your cellular data is already on, switch it off and turn it on again. That will lead to a fresh start and will likely resolve the matter.

Check for Updates

Sometimes an update may be needed for the cellular connection to work correctly. Apple often releases updates that help users use their iPhones more efficiently. When an iPhone update is available, you will get a notification on your screen, so always do the necessary update whenever you see this. Besides that, you can manually go to Settings > General > About > Software Update. You’ll know that an update is possible if it has the Update Now button active.

Restart the iPhone

If your cellular connection still does not work after doing previous steps, try simply restarting your iPhone again. Sometimes crashes happen, which prevent cellular data from working correctly. Restart your device, wait a few seconds, and check if the cellular data is back on.

Reset the Network Settings of Your iPhone

Sometimes there might be some severe software issue that prevents the cellular data from adequately working. Then, resetting may do the trick. However, remember that when you reset the network settings on your iPhone, all your network settings will be restored to the default. This means, you will lose all saved network information you have stored on the device. After you reset the network settings, it will be like connecting your device to your home network for the first time.

Changing the APN Settings of Your iPhone

An advanced troubleshooting step is to check and modify the APN or the Access Point Name setting on your iPhone.

The APN is like the gateway between your carrier’s network and the World Wide Web (www) or the internet. If the set APN on your device is wrong, you’ll really stumble upon errors. So, here’s how to change it:

  1. On your iPhone, select Settings > Cellular Network/Mobile Network.
  2. Navigate to Mobile Data Options.
  3. Then, choose APN Settings.

The figures you must input there will depend on the carrier you’re on. If you’re with AT&T, check AT&T’s APN settings for an iPhone. If you’re with Verizon, check Verizon’s APN settings for an iPhone.

Conclusion

If your iPhone isn’t connecting to mobile data after a reset, try toggling airplane mode ON/OFF.

Check the hardware or the SIM card and see if it’s inserted properly. Then, check the software of the phone, its APN settings, and perform reset network settings if it’s still unable to connect.
